A section of primary school teachers in Yumbe District is under scrutiny for allegedly transferring themselves to schools of their choice without official approval. Reports indicate that after waiting in vain for formal transfer letters, some teachers moved independently, disrupting staffing in various schools.
The Yumbe District Education Department had processed transfers for this year, but the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Mr. Moses Chuna Kapolon, canceled them, citing delays. Some affected headteachers, including Mr. Isaac Adebuga of Kechuru Primary School, confirmed that teachers left without official letters, leaving schools short-staffed.
One affected teacher, Mr. Chandiga Ahumed, defended his move, citing health issues and a need to be closer to family. However, the District Education Officer, Mr. Rasul Luriga, denied authorizing any self-transfers, warning that teachers involved should not involve the department in their actions.
Mr. Kapolon condemned the practice, labeling it unlawful and disruptive. He vowed disciplinary action against teachers who self-transferred, while an investigation is underway to determine the full extent of the issue.
