Police in West Nile have announced that they will launch an operation against errant drivers and riders in the region who go against the traffic rules.
The targeted operation is aimed at preventing cases of road crashes, protecting other road users, and boosting security by ensuring all riders and drivers are licensed.
Police note that the majority of bodaboda riders in the region are below 18 years, many have dropped out of school, have not undertaken any training, and are unlicensed.
Asea Collins, the Police Public Relations Officer for West Nile, notes that many riders and drivers are reckless on the road, which puts other road users at risk of crashes.

The operation comes at a time when Arua City Bodaboda Association is conducting an exercise to verify its members through registration and plans to organize trainings on road safety.
The association's Acting Chairperson, Amaku Swadik, believes that thier move will contribute to addressing road crashes as riders will be equipped with road safety knowledge and traffic rules.

The operation, which had partly started, involves arrests of errant riders and drivers who will be fined when found guilty of using motorcycles or cars in dangerous mechanical condition, overspeeding, and overloading.
Police previously conducted similar operations and arrested many riders and drivers and impounded their motorcycles and cars, which were in dangerous mechanical condition and those that were unlicensed.
