Lira, Uganda – April 19, 2025 — The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) leadership in the Lango Sub-region has officially endorsed Mr. Jimmy Akena, the party president and son of former President Apollo Milton Obote, as their flagbearer in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
The endorsement, announced during a regional delegates’ conference held in Lira City on Friday, signals UPC's renewed push to reclaim national leadership after decades in opposition. Delegates cited Mr. Akena’s “proven leadership qualities,” his deep understanding of Uganda’s political history, and his “potential to restore hope” among Ugandans, particularly in regions that bore the brunt of past conflicts.
“Jimmy Akena represents continuity and a chance to correct the historical injustices our people have endured,” said Mr. Charles Odur, the UPC Lango Sub-region coordinator. “We believe he is best placed to unite the country, address the long-standing needs of insurgency survivors in northern Uganda, and ensure equitable service delivery.”
Mr. Akena, who has led UPC since 2015, pledged to prioritize national healing, youth empowerment, and the rehabilitation of war-affected areas if elected. “This is not just a campaign for the presidency; it’s a campaign for dignity, justice, and equal opportunity,” Akena said while addressing the enthusiastic delegates.
The UPC endorsement adds a fresh dynamic to the 2026 presidential race, where President Yoweri Museveni, in power since 1986, is widely expected to seek re-election under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
Observers say Akena’s candidacy could galvanize support in northern Uganda and among older voters nostalgic for the Obote legacy, but also appeal to a younger demographic seeking change.
The UPC is expected to officially unveil its national roadmap and campaign strategy later this year.
