JUBA, 07 March 2024 – A United Nations helicopter conducting an evacuation mission in Nasir, Upper Nile State, South Sudan, came under fire today, resulting in the death of a crew member and serious injuries to two others.
According to a statement from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), the helicopter was attempting to extract several members of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), including an injured General, when it was attacked. The General and several SSPDF soldiers were killed during the incident, despite the evacuation attempt being coordinated with all parties involved.
UNMISS had launched the evacuation as part of its efforts to de-escalate political tensions in Nasir following recent clashes between the SSPDF and armed youth, which had led to significant casualties and civilian displacement.
Nicholas Haysom, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, strongly condemned the attack, stating, “The attack on UNMISS personnel is utterly abhorrent and may constitute a war crime under international law. We deeply regret the tragic loss of our colleague and express our sincere condolences to his loved ones.”
He also expressed regret over the deaths of those being evacuated, particularly as safe passage had been assured. UNMISS is calling for an investigation to determine those responsible and ensure accountability.
The mission urged all parties to refrain from further violence and called on South Sudanese leaders to engage in dialogue to prevent further deterioration of the security situation. UNMISS emphasized the importance of upholding the ceasefire and protecting the integrity of the Revitalized Peace Agreement.
