The UNICEF-supported ANC-IM HER KEEPER CAMPAIGN has officially launched in Yumbe District with the aim of improving antenatal care (ANC) uptake, particularly during the critical first trimester of pregnancy.

This three-month initiative focuses on increasing male involvement and community engagement to ensure safer pregnancies and healthier outcomes for women in the region.

The campaign's launch event, held on 6th March 2025, with key district entry meetings, brought together district health officials, community leaders, local drama groups, and civil society organizations to strategize on the best approaches to address the gaps in ANC services.

In Yumbe, only 54% of pregnant women attend their first ANC visit during the first trimester, with Kei Subcounty (10%) and Kerwa (20%) having the lowest uptake.

To tackle these challenges, the ANC-IM HER KEEPER CAMPAIGN will focus on these sub-counties through community dialogues, health education sessions, MDD performances, and radio talk shows.

The campaign team began the day with a meeting at the Yumbe Youth CSO Hub, where they discussed strategies with Mr. Bogere Ismail, the hub manager. Mr. Bogere emphasized the importance of creative community-driven approaches and recommended engaging the Yumbe Never Fail Drama Group (YANFAD). Mr. Bogere Ismail (Youth CSO Hub Manager):

"Drama groups like YANFAD have a strong influence in our communities. They can help us spread the ANC message in a way that resonates with people."

Drama has proven to be an effective way to engage communities in health education. YANFAD, having previously worked on health-related campaigns during the COVID-19 pandemic, expressed their enthusiasm to support the ANC initiative.

"We have used drama to educate communities on health issues before, and we are ready to do it again. ANC is a critical issue, and we want to see more men supporting their pregnant partners."

A crucial discussion took place with Mr. Ojjo Zubeir, the District Health Officer (DHO), who highlighted the importance of data-driven interventions in addressing the district’s low ANC uptake.

"We must focus on sub-counties with the lowest ANC uptake. This campaign is timely, and we will work closely with you to ensure its success."

The DHO also stressed the need for transparency and documentation to track the campaign’s progress, leading to the submission of a detailed work plan and budget for approval.

The campaign received a warm endorsement from Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Mr. Mahad, who emphasized that ANC is not just a health issue but a community-wide concern.

"ANC is not just a health issue; it’s a community issue. We need everyone—men, women, and leaders—to work together to ensure safe pregnancies and deliveries."

Mr. Mahad (Deputy RDC):

Mrs. Clara, the focal person for persons with disabilities, was also introduced to ensure the campaign is inclusive and reaches all women, including those with disabilities.

A meeting with Mr. Habibu Tabani, the district biostatistician, provided valuable data insights that will help the campaign target the most underserved areas.

"The data shows that faith-based facilities in some sub-counties are struggling to deliver ANC services due to limited resources. We need targeted interventions in these areas."

The data revealed that Kei Subcounty and Kerwa Subcounty are the most in need of ANC interventions, making them the primary focus areas for the campaign.

Mr. Habibu Tabani (Biostatistician) Gives a Brief on the Data:

The ANC-IM HER KEEPER CAMPAIGN marks an important step toward improving maternal health in Yumbe District. By engaging community members, empowering men, and leveraging local drama groups, the campaign aims to boost ANC uptake and ensure safer pregnancies for women.

With the support of district officials, community leaders, and local drama groups, Yumbe is taking a bold and collaborative step toward healthier mothers and stronger families.
