Apac District, Uganda – April 2, 2025 – The Government of Uganda has officially launched the malaria vaccine into its routine immunization program, marking a significant milestone in the country’s fight against the deadly disease. The launch event took place today at Booma Grounds in Apac District and was presided over by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja.

The Prime Minister was joined by the Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, area Members of Parliament, the Apac District leadership, officials from the Ministry of Health (MOH), and development partners supporting Uganda’s malaria response.

Speaking at the event, Rt. Hon. Nabbanja emphasized the government’s commitment to eradicating malaria and improving child survival rates.

“The introduction of the malaria vaccine into Uganda’s routine immunization schedule is a historic step forward in protecting our children from this deadly disease. We urge all parents and caregivers to take advantage of this life-saving intervention,” she said.

Dr. Aceng highlighted that the vaccine will be administered in selected high-burden districts before expanding nationwide.

“The malaria vaccine, which has been tested and proven effective, will complement existing malaria prevention measures such as mosquito nets, indoor residual spraying, and early treatment,” she stated.

Malaria remains a major public health challenge in Uganda, contributing significantly to child mortality.

The introduction of the vaccine is expected to reduce severe cases and deaths, particularly among children under five years old. Uganda joins a growing list of African countries integrating the malaria vaccine into their national immunization programs following successful pilot programs in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to visit health centers to have their children vaccinated as part of the routine immunization schedule. The Ministry of Health, in partnership with global health organizations, will continue to sensitize the public on the importance of vaccination in the fight against malaria.

The launch of the malaria vaccine is part of Uganda’s broader strategy to eliminate malaria and improve public health outcomes, reinforcing the government’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its citizens.
