Kigali, Rwanda – January 29, 2025
This afternoon, the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) received and escorted more than 280 Romanian mercenaries who had been fighting alongside the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) in eastern DRC.
The mercenaries surrendered to the M23 rebel group following the fall of Goma, a key strategic city near the Rwandan border.
According to military sources, the surrender took place after intense clashes between M23 and FARDC forces, which culminated in M23 gaining control over Goma.
The Romanian fighters, reportedly contracted by the Congolese army, found themselves isolated after the city's capture and opted to lay down their arms.
Following negotiations, they were handed over to RDF for processing and safe transport.RDF units stationed along the border facilitated the transfer, escorting the surrendered mercenaries to Kigali under tight security.
The convoy, consisting of military vehicles and personnel, ensured their safe passage as they were transported to a secure holding facility for further interrogation and diplomatic processing.
Rwandan authorities have not yet disclosed the next steps regarding the mercenaries’ fate, but sources indicate that diplomatic engagements may follow, involving the Romanian government and international organizations.
This development adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC, where multiple armed groups continue to fight for territorial control. The situation remains fluid, with RDF monitoring the security implications of the ongoing hostilities across the border.
