Yumbe, Uganda – Reach A Hand Uganda recently completed a vital mapping exercise across six health facilities in Yumbe District to assess their readiness to provide Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights (SRHR) services. This initiative focused on improving access to these services for adolescents, young people, and women of reproductive age.

The health facilities included in the assessment were Iyete Health Centre III, Yumbe Health Centre IV, Amaniri Health Centre III, Yumbe Hospital, Aliapi Health Centre II, and Twajiji Health Centre III. The exercise aimed to identify the strengths and gaps in service delivery to ensure that SRHR services are accessible, especially for vulnerable populations in the district.

In addition to evaluating the facilities, Reach A Hand Uganda introduced the #ProtectSRHR project to the health teams. The initiative emphasized the importance of SRHR education and services, particularly for young people. As part of this effort, the organization launched a call for peer educators who will help increase awareness and engage communities in promoting reproductive health rights.

“We are committed to ensuring that SRHR services are accessible and effective, particularly for the youth and women in Yumbe District. Through this mapping, we are addressing gaps, fostering better service delivery, and working towards an inclusive healthcare system,” said a Reach A Hand Uganda representative.

The mapping exercise also highlighted key challenges affecting healthcare service uptake, including resource constraints, inadequate training of personnel, and cultural barriers. These challenges will guide the development of a system-strengthening agenda aimed at improving healthcare services, training healthcare workers, and ensuring communities have access to comprehensive SRHR information.

By identifying these barriers, Reach A Hand Uganda is set to strengthen its efforts in Yumbe District, ensuring that the SRHR needs of adolescents, young people, and women of reproductive age are met with the necessary support and resources.

This mapping exercise marks a significant step in improving sexual and reproductive health outcomes in Yumbe District, contributing to broader public health goals and enhancing the well-being of the community.
