A group of teachers in Oyam North has accused Morish Obong, the chairperson of WALIMU SACCO, of misappropriating 97 million shillings meant for their savings and loan benefits.
The affected teachers claim that Obong has gone into hiding after failing to remit the funds, even as WALIMU SACCO continues to deduct money from their salaries.
Chris Odongo, a teacher at Amaji Primary School, and Richard Odongo Otim, a teacher at Awelobuturyio, are at the forefront of the call for district authorities to intervene.
They allege that teachers from Oyam North Teachers SACCO entrusted their hard-earned savings to Obong, expecting financial security and access to loans. However, their funds have vanished, leaving many struggling to meet personal financial obligations.
The affected teachers report that despite numerous attempts to reach Obong and WALIMU SACCO officials for explanations, their concerns have been ignored. Many now fear they may never recover their savings unless local authorities and law enforcement take immediate action.
"We demand transparency and justice. Our money was meant to improve our livelihoods, not to disappear without accountability," said Richard Odongo Otim.
The teachers are calling on the district leadership to investigate the matter urgently and hold those responsible accountable. They also want WALIMU SACCO to halt salary deductions until the situation is resolved.
As the controversy unfolds, teachers in Oyam North remain hopeful that authorities will step in to recover their funds and ensure that such financial mismanagement does not happen again.
