Kampala, Uganda – April 23, 2025 — The National Unity Platform (NUP) has issued a strict 30-day ultimatum to its estranged Members of Parliament, warning them to return to the party fold and resolve any pending internal disputes or risk expulsion ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The directive was announced on Tuesday by NUP Deputy President for the Buganda Region, Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi, during a mobilization meeting with central region party leaders at the party’s headquarters in Kamwokya, Kampala.
Kivumbi expressed concern over a growing number of MPs who have allegedly strayed from party values and failed to engage with the party leadership. He emphasized that those who do not report to the party secretariat within the given timeframe will face replacement.
“We’re giving our rebel MPs only 30 days to come back and resolve their issues with the party leadership. If they don’t, it will be too late,” Kivumbi warned. “We need to begin preparations early—this time we’re targeting more than 100 parliamentary seats.”
Among the MPs under scrutiny are Mathias Mpuuga (Nyendo-Mukungwe), Abed Bwanika (Kimananya-Kabonera), Bashir Kazibwe (Kawempe South), and Twaha Kagabo (Bukoto South). These legislators are accused of contravening party positions and undermining its unity.
NUP Party President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, echoed Kivumbi’s sentiments, declaring that the party will not hesitate to field fresh candidates against defiant MPs.
“We need candidates who are vetted, trusted, tested, and dependable,” Bobi Wine stated. “This election, we are going all out to defeat the National Resistance Movement (NRM) from the presidency down to the village level.”
He also criticized MPs who, in his view, have failed to uphold their promises to the electorate. “When you don’t deliver on the promises made to the people, you behave no differently from a thief,” he charged.
The move signals NUP’s aggressive early preparations and a renewed focus on internal discipline as the party gears up for what it terms a "fierce and focused campaign" in the lead-up to the 2026 elections.
