Terego, Uganda – March 2025
Members of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Terego district stormed the district headquarters on Tuesday morning, demanding the immediate transfer of Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Angalia Godwin Akiki.
The protesters accused Akiki of fostering divisions within the NRM, failing to curb corruption, and allegedly conspiring to manipulate party affairs in the district. Despite attempts by a few police officers and Deputy RDC Peter Onyango to stop them, the demonstrators forced their way into the headquarters.
One protester even threatened to challenge President Yoweri Museveni in the 2026 elections if Akiki was not removed, arguing that the president’s failure to act reflected broader challenges in implementing his policies. The demonstrators claimed to possess audio and video evidence implicating the RDC in efforts to control and manipulate NRM activities in Terego.
James Afadriayo, the district NRM secretary, asserted that Akiki had been privately discussing strategies to exert influence over party members. Furthermore, the protesters accused the RDC of neglecting his duty to combat corruption, pointing to stalled projects such as the incomplete Nyara Bridge, which is currently under investigation by the Inspectorate of Government.
At the time of the protest, the RDC was absent, leaving his deputy, John Peter Onyango, to address the angry crowd. When contacted for a response, Akiki dismissed the accusations, stating that his efforts have been focused on recruiting opposition members into the NRM. He defended his stance, emphasizing that no RDC could align with the opposition.
Regarding the corruption allegations, Akiki insisted he was following legal channels to address corruption issues, including the Nyara Bridge project.
Unmoved by his response, the protesters vowed to escalate their demands by marching to the RDC secretariat in Kampala if Akiki is not transferred within the month.
