Gulu City, April 25, 2025 — The glitz and glamour of the Northern Uganda Film Awards (NUFA) 2025 at Acholi Inn was not only about celebrating creativity but also honoring the giants whose legacies continue to inspire.
Thousands of filmmakers, film enthusiasts, and dignitaries gathered to recognize outstanding achievements in film and pay tribute to the region’s fallen icons, including Late Hon. Jacob Oulanyah, Late Lt. Gen. Paul Lokech, Late Col. Charles Okello Engola, Late Dr. A.M Obote, and Late Clipper Ogwang, among others.
In a heartfelt moment, Ambassador Dr. Olara Otunnu praised the organizers for their tribute to Northern Uganda’s greats:
"Thanks for the memories of the great people whom you have shown their photos, thank you for your tribute to them. Next time, come to me and I'll give you a long list of them!" Otunnu said, urging for even deeper recognition of the region’s heroes in future editions.
Otunnu also delivered a powerful message to the filmmakers, urging them to remain original and true to their roots.
"I beg you the creatives to be authentic and initiate the world. Let's avoid being copycats! Draw from the wealth of your creativity and you'll go far," he emphasized, drawing loud applause from the audience.
Earlier in the evening, NUFA President Francis Ojok Odong credited the success of the event to the unwavering support of partners such as Q FM Lira, Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Kakebe Technologies, and the Luo Foundation.
UCC representative Leonard Amanya commended the resilience of the filmmakers and encouraged them to utilize available opportunities to strengthen the sector.
The event was further marked by the inspiring speech of Hon. Betty Amongi (Minister of Gender, Labor and Social Development), who pledged UGX 5 million to NUFA and announced a UGX 3 billion fund set aside for creatives in the next financial year.
As the night came to a close, the Northern Uganda Film Awards 2025 stood out not only as a celebration of talent but as a powerful reminder of the importance of authenticity, cultural pride, and storytelling that reflects the true spirit of the region.
