A staff member of the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has been arrested and arraigned before the Buganda Road Court on charges of obtaining money by false pretense.

Taremwa Jassy, an employee at the NIRA office located on Lumumba Avenue in Kampala, was apprehended following an operation conducted by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

According to court documents, Jassy was accused of extorting money from a member of the public, falsely promising to expedite the replacement of a lost National Identity Card within one week.

The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, reported the incident after failing to receive the promised service.

The suspect was formally charged in court this afternoon and has been remanded until 6th February 2025.

The authorities have emphasized their commitment to tackling corruption within government institutions, warning the public against engaging in unauthorized transactions for national identification services.

NIRA has yet to release an official statement regarding the arrest, but the case has sparked fresh concerns about fraudulent activities in the issuance of vital identification documents.

Authorities have urged citizens to follow the official procedures when applying for services at NIRA offices and to report any instances of corruption or misconduct by government officials.
