A new political party, the People Power Front (PPF), was officially unveiled in Kampala this afternoon by a group of individuals claiming to have registered the party.

The group, led by Hajj Musa Misango, who identifies as the PPF chairman, along with secretary general Spartan Mukagyi and Central region chairman Robert Rutaro, announced that PPF was officially registered as a political party in August 2024.

The party's unveiling, however, has sparked confusion and controversy due to its striking resemblance to the country’s leading opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP). The group adopted NUP’s iconic red berets, slogan, and symbol, raising questions about the party's intentions and legitimacy. NUP, led by Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, initially founded the People Power movement, which was later adopted as the slogan for the NUP party.

When approached for clarification on the legitimacy of the People Power Front's registration, Julius Mucunguzi, the Head of Public Relations and Spokesperson for the Electoral Commission, stated he was unsure of the details. He confirmed that he would need to verify the information before providing a response on the matter.

The development comes at a time when political tensions are high in the country, with opposition parties actively engaging in strategies to consolidate their influence in the political landscape. It remains to be seen how this new party will be received by the electorate and whether it will affect the standing of NUP in the upcoming political contests.
