Apac, Uganda – Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabanja has disclosed that Uganda People's Congress (UPC) President Jimmy James Michael (JJM) Akena intends to challenge President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in the upcoming elections, a move she suggested is a breach of an existing agreement.
Speaking at the Malaria Vaccination launch at Apac Boma Ground, Nabanja remarked,
"Our son Akena wants to break the agreement we have with him. I believe a peace talk will yield fruits. As the son of the President, he'll meet his father, and I believe they'll agree."
Akena, the son of Uganda’s former President Dr. Apollo Milton Obote, has been leading UPC and working closely with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). However, Nabanja’s statement suggests tensions may be brewing within the alliance, as Akena appears poised to take on Museveni, who has led Uganda since 1986.
The Prime Minister’s comments have sparked political debate, with analysts questioning the nature of the agreement between Akena and the NRM government. While details remain unclear, speculation is mounting about Akena’s potential candidacy and how it could reshape Uganda’s political landscape.
The revelation overshadowed Nabanja’s main purpose at the event—the launch of Uganda’s malaria vaccination campaign. She later proceeded to read President Museveni’s speech, emphasizing the government’s commitment to eliminating malaria.
Akena has yet to respond publicly to Nabanja’s remarks. His potential candidacy could mark a significant shift in Ugandan politics, setting up a dramatic contest in the next general election.
