In a move to consolidate its leadership and prepare for the upcoming political season, the National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced the appointment of Butambala County MP Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi as the new Deputy President for Buganda Region, succeeding Mathias Mpuuga.

This decision was made during a crucial National consultative Meeting held in Kampala, where several other strategic leadership changes were also unveiled.

The meeting, led by NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), saw the unveiling of several acting appointments, which are expected to guide the party in the lead-up to the June delegates’ conference.

NUP Official Statements on the Reshfulment

Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya addressed pressing issues during the press conference, criticizing the regime’s Electoral Commission for manipulating electoral boundaries in areas where the opposition is strong.

Rubongoya emphasized the need for fair representation and the protection of democratic rights, stating:

"The Electoral Commission is undermining the will of the people by reducing electoral areas in opposition strongholds. We will not stand by as our citizens are disenfranchised."

In response to these challenges, NUP has taken decisive steps to strengthen its leadership structure, appointing key figures to fill critical vacant positions across different regions.

Kivumbi’s Vision for BugandaMuhammad Muwanga Kivumbi brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having chaired the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee.

During his acceptance speech, Kivumbi outlined his vision for a unified and empowered Buganda region, focusing on youth engagement and grassroots development.

"Our mission is to ensure that Buganda thrives politically, socially, and economically. We will focus on mobilizing the youth and promoting policies that resonate with the needs of our people," Kivumbi stated.

Bridging Gaps and Moving ForwardIn his address, Rubongoya highlighted the importance of unity within the party, acknowledging the challenges that have plagued NUP over the past year. He stressed that the leadership changes were necessary to address these challenges and foster a stronger, more inclusive political platform:

"These appointments reflect our commitment to bridging the gaps and strengthening our party’s foundation. We will continue to work towards ensuring that our party remains a true voice for the people," Rubongoya emphasized.

Reflecting on Leadership ChangesThe departure of Mathias Mpuuga has been a point of contention within the party. His suspension followed accusations of mismanagement and controversies surrounding a UGX 500 million service award. Since then, Mpuuga has established the Democratic Alliance, a new political pressure group, further deepening the divide.

As NUP looks ahead, these appointments signal a renewed focus on preparing for the next electoral cycle, with an emphasis on accountability, inclusivity, and the protection of democratic values.

The party’s unwavering commitment to empowering citizens and fighting for their rights remains at the forefront of its agenda.
