Lira, Uganda — The Ministry of Health has officially launched the construction of the Lira Regional Blood Bank, a significant project aimed at strengthening blood collection, storage, and distribution in the Lango sub-region.
The facility, projected to cost UGX 9.6 billion, will be a major boost to healthcare services in northern Uganda. Of the total budget, UGX 5.6 billion has been allocated for the construction works, while UGX 4 billion will go towards equipping the blood bank with modern facilities and equipment.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, officials from the Ministry emphasized the importance of the new blood bank in addressing blood shortages and improving emergency response in hospitals across the region.
Once completed, the Lira Regional Blood Bank is expected to enhance the efficiency and reliability of blood supply not only within Lango but also neighboring regions, ultimately saving more lives.
The construction is part of the government’s broader efforts to improve health infrastructure and ensure quality healthcare services reach all Ugandans.
