On Thursday, thousands of Goma residents gathered at a rally organized by the M23 rebels, who have recently seized control of the city in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The event aimed to reassure the populace of their safety under the new administration, as the rebels seek to consolidate support amid escalating international scrutiny.

Corneille Nangaa, the leader of the M23, addressed the crowd, urging a return to normalcy by reopening schools and businesses.

He emphasized that the rebels' presence was to ensure security and stability in the region. Despite a declared unilateral ceasefire intended to facilitate humanitarian aid, the M23 has continued its advance, instilling fear among residents.

The conflict has led to significant casualties, with nearly 3,000 deaths reported since late January. Hospitals in Goma are overwhelmed with patients suffering from gunshot and shrapnel wounds, leading to urgent appeals for blood donations. Transport disruptions have further complicated the delivery of aid and medical supplies, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

Internationally, there is growing concern over Rwanda's alleged support of the M23 rebels. Despite official denials, reports indicate that hundreds of Rwandan troops have been killed in the DRC, suggesting deeper involvement than acknowledged.

This has led to increased diplomatic pressure on Rwanda to clarify its role in the conflict.

In response to the escalating violence, the African Union Peace and Security Council plans to address the crisis in an upcoming summit. Meanwhile, local residents continue to grapple with the immediate challenges of displacement, insecurity, and limited access to essential services.

As the situation develops, the international community watches closely, urging all parties to cease hostilities and engage in dialogue to restore peace and stability in the region.
