Koboko, Uganda – The construction of an outpatient department at the new Koboko General Hospital has come to a halt due to a funding shortfall, raising concerns over the future of healthcare services in the district.
Launched in 2019, the phased project aimed to establish a modern outpatient department in Barifa, Dranya Sub-county, with a budget of UGX 6.6 billion. However, as of now, only UGX 2.7 billion has been disbursed, leaving a significant financial gap that has stalled progress on the facility.
The delay has sparked concern among engineers and health officials, who warn that prolonged stagnation could affect the integrity of the construction. The region's residents, numbering over 64,000, currently rely on a Health Centre IV for medical services, which is struggling to meet the growing demand.
Local leaders and health professionals have called on the government to prioritize funding for the project to ensure timely completion. Many fear that further delays could have severe implications for healthcare delivery in Koboko and surrounding areas.
As the situation unfolds, stakeholders await a response from the government, hoping for renewed financial commitment to resume work on the much-needed medical facility.
