Kampala – The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the temporary closure of Karuma and Ayago Bridges along the Kampala–Gulu highway beginning Monday, March 24, 2025.

According to the ministry, the closure is necessary to facilitate the installation of expansion joints, a crucial maintenance procedure aimed at ensuring the structural integrity and long-term durability of both bridges.

Karuma Bridge, an essential crossing at Karuma Falls, was previously closed in May 2024 due to critical structural defects. After months of extensive repairs, it reopened in December 2024. However, the ministry has scheduled this additional phase of maintenance to strengthen the bridge further.

Similarly, Ayago Bridge will also undergo the same repair works.

The ministry acknowledged that the closure will likely disrupt traffic flow along the Kampala–Gulu highway, a vital corridor connecting central and northern Uganda. In response, ferries at Masindi Port have been fully repaired, tested, and will be operational starting the same day as the closure. These ferries are expected to offer a viable alternative for motorists and transporters.

In an official statement shared via X (formerly Twitter), the ministry urged travelers to adjust their travel plans and stay informed on further updates:

"Please plan your journey accordingly! We regret the inconvenience caused."

Motorists are encouraged to use the designated alternative routes and remain attentive to official announcements to avoid unnecessary delays.

This move comes as part of broader efforts by the government to maintain and upgrade key infrastructure, ensuring safety and efficient transportation across the country.
