March 12, 2025 – The Heads of State and Government of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) convened virtually for the 43rd Extraordinary Summit, focusing on the ongoing political and security situation in South Sudan. The high-level meeting brought together regional leaders and key stakeholders to assess progress on the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

During the summit, IGAD leaders expressed concern over persistent security challenges, including intercommunal violence, delays in security sector reforms, and obstacles to the full implementation of the peace agreement. The leaders underscored the need for accelerated efforts to unify security forces, enhance governance structures, and uphold democratic principles ahead of the country’s anticipated elections.

The discussions also addressed the recent surge in tensions between rival factions, with IGAD urging all parties to exercise restraint and engage in constructive dialogue. The regional bloc reiterated its unwavering commitment to facilitating negotiations and de-escalating conflicts to prevent further instability.

IGAD reaffirmed its support for South Sudan’s transitional government, emphasizing the importance of meeting key benchmarks outlined in the R-ARCSS. The leaders urged all signatories to the agreement to demonstrate political will and prioritize national unity over partisan interests.

"The people of South Sudan have endured immense suffering due to prolonged conflict. It is imperative that all stakeholders remain committed to the peace roadmap to secure a stable and prosperous future," stated one of the IGAD representatives.

The summit also welcomed the continued support of international partners, including the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN), and other regional actors, in assisting South Sudan's peace efforts. IGAD called for enhanced coordination among all stakeholders to address humanitarian challenges and support economic recovery in the country.

In conclusion, IGAD leaders resolved to intensify diplomatic engagements and ensure close monitoring of the peace process. They pledged to hold further consultations to assess the progress of South Sudan’s political transition and provide the necessary interventions to sustain peace and stability.

The 43rd Extraordinary Summit reflects IGAD’s commitment to fostering regional stability and ensuring that South Sudan stays on the path toward lasting peace.
