Moyo, Uganda – March 28, 2025

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has stepped in to resolve tensions surrounding illegal gold mining activities in Metu Subcounty, Moyo District. Minister of State for Energy and Mineral Development, Phiona Nyamutoro, led a mediation effort between the local community and Linsek Holdings Ltd, the holder of exploration license EL00356.

A key issue in the dispute was the lack of proper engagement between investors and the local leadership. The Ministry emphasized that investors should first liaise with district authorities before commencing activities to prevent misunderstandings and hostility.

"We encourage investors to always coordinate with the local leadership for proper introductions to avoid speculation and conflicts with the community," Minister Nyamutoro stated.

To address concerns raised by artisanal miners in Padiga and Arapi villages, the Ministry pledged support in helping them form an association and acquire an artisanal mining license. This move will enable them to operate legally while ensuring Linsek Holdings Ltd continues its exploration activities in the area.

Minister Nyamutoro praised the leaders and residents of Metu Subcounty for their cooperation in resolving the matter amicably. She reiterated the government's commitment to fostering harmony and promoting responsible mineral development in the region.

This intervention marks a significant step towards formalizing mining activities in Moyo District, ensuring local miners benefit while maintaining compliance with national mining regulations.
