Arua City, Uganda – March 26, 2025
In a landmark meeting between gang leaders and authorities from Arua City Council, notorious groups, including Jajamin, Fire Eaters, and Air Japan, officially declared an end to their involvement in theft-related activities. The gang leaders expressed their commitment to abandoning crime and requested government support to channel their energy into productive and community-beneficial ventures.
The meeting, held at the Arua City Council chambers, brought together security officials, local leaders, and representatives of the youth groups, who acknowledged their past actions and pledged to reform. Speaking on behalf of the gangs, one of the leaders emphasized their willingness to transition into legitimate businesses if given the necessary support.
“We have realized that crime does not pay, and we want to change our lives for the better. With government support, we can engage in meaningful activities that will benefit not only us but also the community,” he stated.
City authorities welcomed the gangs’ decision, describing it as a positive step toward ensuring peace and security in Arua. The Mayor of Arua City commended the initiative and assured the groups that the government, in collaboration with development partners, would explore ways to provide vocational training, financial assistance, and employment opportunities.
Security officials also pledged to monitor the progress of the gang members, ensuring they stay on the path of reform. They urged the public to embrace the former criminals and support their reintegration into society.
Residents of Arua City expressed mixed reactions, with some welcoming the decision, while others remained skeptical about the sincerity of the gangs’ surrender. However, many agreed that if the government provides the necessary resources, the move could significantly reduce crime rates and create new opportunities for youth in the region.
The development marks a potential turning point in the security dynamics of Arua City, as authorities and former gang members work together toward a safer and more productive future.
