Kampala, Uganda – March 26, 2025 – At least five people have lost their lives in the wake of severe flooding in Kampala, police have confirmed. The heavy rains, which pounded the city overnight, led to the drowning of three unidentified individuals in the Kinawataka area and two young children in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto.
Authorities are currently working to identify the three bodies recovered in Kinawataka. "We are conducting investigations to ascertain the identities of the deceased and notify their families," a police spokesperson stated.
Tragic Deaths of Two Children in Bukoto
In a heartbreaking turn of events, two young children—three-year-old Otim Kisa Eliza and 11-month-old Ochaka Chon—drowned inside their home in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto. Preliminary police reports suggest that their mother, Lenunu Rose Mary, had locked them inside the house before heading out for work.
Neighbors reported hearing the children's cries but were unable to rescue them as floodwaters quickly engulfed the house. "We tried to break in, but the water was too strong, and by the time we got help, it was too late," said one resident.
Mother Arrested for Alleged Negligence
Following the tragic incident, Kira Road Police arrested Lenunu Rose Mary on allegations of negligence. Neighbors told authorities that this was not the first time she had left the children alone at home. "She often locked them inside while she went about her work," one witness claimed.
The police have launched an investigation into the matter, with officials emphasizing the importance of parental responsibility during such extreme weather conditions.
