Lira City, March 21, 2025 — In a surprising turn of events, leaders of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in Lira City have officially endorsed Health Minister Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero for the position of Lira City Woman Member of Parliament in the upcoming 2026-2031 term.

The endorsement was announced during a high-profile meeting held on March 15, 2025, at Dr. Aceng’s residence in Ireda, Lira City East Division. A total of 253 FDC leaders from across the city convened for the meeting, culminating in a unanimous decision to back Dr. Aceng’s re-election bid.

According to FDC leaders, the decision followed extensive consultations and deliberations aimed at identifying the candidate best suited to steer Lira City forward. They cited Dr. Aceng’s exemplary leadership, commitment to improving health services, and dedication to good governance as key factors in their endorsement.

“Our support for Dr. Aceng is not about party lines, but about delivering quality leadership to the people of Lira City,” said Newton Okello, FDC Lira City General Secretary. “This is a vote of confidence in a leader who has consistently put the interests of our community first.”

The FDC leadership emphasized that their endorsement does not signal defection to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, under which Dr. Aceng serves. Instead, they framed their decision as a recognition of her effectiveness, transcending political affiliations.

The meeting also saw strong calls for a peaceful, issue-based campaign ahead of the 2026 elections. The FDC leaders condemned any forms of intimidation, blackmail, or threats, urging all candidates and supporters to uphold democratic values throughout the electoral process.

The endorsement statement was jointly signed by key FDC officials, including Chairman Obote Denis, Lira City East Chairman Moses Etyang, Lira City West Chairman Mzee Ogwal Bonny, and Women’s League Chairperson Ms. Oroma Janet.

With the general elections less than a year away, this endorsement is poised to significantly influence the political dynamics in Lira City. Dr. Aceng, who will be seeking another term, is expected to face competition from various contenders, but the FDC’s backing may give her a decisive edge.
