Police in Nebbi District have arrested Bedjo Yunge Jaa for attempting to sell his 11-year-old daughter to Stephen Mugisa, the chairman of Labongo Sub-county in Masindi District. The shocking incident unfolded at Ogwente Lodge in Masindi town, where Yunge was apprehended after Mugisa, deeply disturbed by the proposition, collaborated with Police to set a trap.
According to Mugisa, Yunge approached him claiming he could no longer care for the child and wanted to sell her.
"He even promised to sell me another child in a month’s time," Mugisa revealed.
Police provided Mugisa with the Shs22 million initially demanded by Yunge. However, the suspect later tried to increase the price to Shs25 million. Moments after accepting the money, Yunge was arrested.
Tinka Zarugaba, the officer in charge of crime intelligence in Masindi, commended Mugisa for his quick action and cooperation with law enforcement.
"This is an unusual and alarming case. We are investigating if Yunge is the girl’s biological father,” Zarugaba stated.
The child, now under the care of the Police Family and Child Protection Unit, confirmed that Yunge is her father. She accused him of forcing her out of school with plans to marry her off in exchange for a bride price.
“He asked me to drop out of school, saying he wanted me to marry a rich man who could give him a good bride price," the girl disclosed. "I had no choice. I’m only lucky the person he approached wasn’t ill-intentioned. I still want to go back to school—I was in Primary Five."
The Police are continuing investigations into the case, with Yunge facing possible charges of human trafficking and child exploitation. Authorities are also working to ensure the girl’s safety and support her return to school.
