In a recent virtual Extra-Ordinary Summit, East African Community (EAC) leaders convened to tackle the intensifying humanitarian crisis in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Kenyan President William Ruto, serving as the current EAC Chair, called for an immediate ceasefire and emphasized the necessity of peace and dialogue to resolve the conflict.

The summit saw participation from leaders of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and Somalia; however, DRC President Félix Tshisekedi was notably absent.

The urgency of the meeting was underscored by recent developments, including the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group's claim of capturing Goma, a major city in Eastern DRC.

This offensive has led to significant displacement and heightened regional tensions. The international community, including the United Nations, has expressed deep concern over the situation, with calls for Rwanda to cease its support for M23 and withdraw its forces from DRC territory.

Despite President Tshisekedi's absence, the EAC leaders reaffirmed their commitment to seeking a peaceful resolution.

They proposed merging existing peace initiatives, such as the Luanda and Nairobi processes, into a unified framework to streamline efforts towards lasting peace in the region.

President Ruto urged all parties involved to prioritize engagement and constructive dialogue, emphasizing that a sustainable solution can only be achieved through peaceful means.

He also called upon the African Union and the international community to collaborate closely with the EAC in encouraging the warring parties to prioritize engagement.

The absence of President Tshisekedi has raised concerns about the effectiveness of these efforts, but the EAC leaders remain steadfast in their resolve to address the crisis and alleviate the suffering of the affected populations.
