Kampala, Uganda – April 22, 2025
The Church of Uganda has officially prohibited pregnant women and individuals with health complications from participating in this year’s Martyrs Day pilgrimage to Namugongo.
The decision, announced by Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, is aimed at safeguarding the well-being of vulnerable groups ahead of the June 3rd commemoration.Speaking during the official launch of preparations for the annual event, Archbishop Kaziimba emphasized the need for caution, noting that the physical demands of the pilgrimage can pose serious health risks.
“We recognize the spiritual significance of this journey, but we must also be mindful of the health and safety of our people. We strongly advise pregnant women and those who are ill to refrain from making the journey this year,” Archbishop Kaziimba stated.
The annual pilgrimage to Namugongo commemorates the Uganda Martyrs—22 young Christian converts who were executed between 1885 and 1887 for their faith.
The event typically attracts thousands of faithful from Uganda and beyond, many of whom walk long distances in a show of devotion.
This year’s celebrations will be led by the Diocese of West Lango, under the theme “United for Sustainable Faith.” With large crowds expected, the Church is also coordinating with health and security agencies to ensure a safe and orderly pilgrimage.
The Archbishop also urged local parishes to support those unable to travel by organizing local celebrations and spiritual activities in their communities.Further details about transportation, accommodation, and security measures for the Martyrs Day events are expected in the coming weeks.
