Kampala, Uganda – March 26, 2025 – In addition to donating rice worth 2 million US dollars (approximately 7.3 billion Ugandan shillings) to support vulnerable communities in Karamoja, the Government of China is also empowering Ugandan farmers with skills in rice cultivation.
Chinese agricultural experts are currently working alongside local farmers in various regions under the third-phase of the South–South Cooperation framework — a global initiative that promotes collaboration among developing countries to enhance agricultural productivity and food security.
The ongoing initiative aims not just to provide short-term relief but to equip Ugandans with long-term solutions to address hunger and poverty. Experts from China are sharing knowledge on improved rice varieties, modern planting techniques, irrigation practices, and post-harvest handling.
Speaking during a briefing in Kampala, officials from the Ministry of Agriculture highlighted the importance of China’s dual support approach.
> “This partnership is not only providing immediate food relief to Karamoja but is also helping build capacity for sustainable rice farming in Uganda,” said an agriculture ministry official.
Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, who recently received the rice consignment, commended the initiative and reiterated the government’s commitment to agricultural transformation.
The South–South Cooperation has previously contributed to increasing rice yields in other parts of Uganda, and the current phase is expected to further strengthen the country’s rice-growing potential — reducing dependence on imports and boosting food security.
The Chinese embassy emphasized that the support aligns with China’s broader goal of fostering sustainable development and resilience in partner nations.
With Karamoja facing recurring food insecurity, this integrated support from China is seen as a strategic step toward not only feeding the hungry but also equipping communities to feed themselves in the future.
