Kampala, Uganda – March 26, 2025 – The Government of China has donated rice worth 2 million US dollars (approximately 7.3 billion Ugandan shillings) to Uganda to support vulnerable communities and school-going children in the Karamoja sub-region.
The donation follows a formal request by the Government of Uganda seeking emergency food assistance for the drought-hit region, which continues to face chronic food insecurity.
While receiving the consignment, Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for the timely support, noting that the rice will be distributed to those most in need, especially children in schools and families severely affected by hunger.
> “We thank the Chinese government for responding swiftly to our request. The rice has been tested and is confirmed safe for human consumption. It will go a long way in supporting our people in Karamoja,” Nabbanja said.
Karamoja has been grappling with food shortages due to prolonged dry spells, low agricultural yields, and poverty. The region, often dependent on humanitarian assistance, has seen increased malnutrition rates, particularly among children and expectant mothers.
Officials say the rice donation will be distributed through the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) in coordination with local governments to ensure transparency and efficiency in delivery.
The Chinese embassy in Kampala reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Uganda in addressing humanitarian needs and strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
This latest gesture adds to a series of ongoing development and humanitarian collaborations between Uganda and China.
