The Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has temporarily suspended the criminal trial of veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Samuel Lubega Mukaaku, who are facing charges of inciting violence.

The ruling, delivered on Thursday by Senior Principal Grade One Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko, grants a 60-day adjournment to allow Dr. Besigye to receive medical treatment.

"I have decided to halt the trial for 60 days, with the hope that Besigye will have received the necessary treatment and recovered sufficiently to resume proceedings," Magistrate Nankya stated.

The case against Besigye and Mukaaku stems from allegations that they incited violence through public demonstrations against the government’s economic policies.

Their arrest and subsequent prosecution have drawn significant attention, with supporters arguing that the charges are politically motivated. With the temporary suspension of the case, all eyes will now be on Dr. Besigye’s recovery and whether the trial will proceed as scheduled after the 60-day period.
