Arua, Uganda – In a significant move to strengthen diplomatic relations, Arua District has allocated four acres of land for the establishment of an embassy representing 11 European Union (EU) member states. This initiative aims to enhance collaboration and address the socio-economic challenges facing the West Nile region.

Arua District Chairman Alfred Okuonzi announced the donation, emphasizing its role in fostering long-term partnerships between the EU and the local governments in West Nile. The region, which comprises 13 local governments, is heavily impacted by refugee influxes and climate-related challenges.

“I have given a four-acre land in Arua at no cost for you to put your embassy, which is going to be the European Union Embassy. This is to enhance this partnership, which is infinite, because the EU has invested a lot in this region of West Nile,” Okuonzi stated.

The European delegation, led by EU Deputy Ambassador Chartain Guillaume, is in the region for a diplomatic mission to assess the political and socio-economic dynamics. West Nile continues to experience an influx of refugees due to ongoing conflicts in neighboring South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Guillaume highlighted the region’s strategic importance, noting that their mission serves as a benchmark for understanding Uganda’s overall economic, social, and political landscape, especially in the lead-up to the 2026 General Elections.

“West Nile is a concentration of all the challenges and opportunities that Uganda as a country is experiencing. Engaging with local leaders and communities here is essential. It also helps us assess Uganda’s preparations for the 2026 general elections,” Guillaume remarked.

Meanwhile, Akuma Odims, Executive Director of the West Nile Development Association, emphasized the region’s economic potential but pointed out the urgent need to address the high unemployment rates among young people.

As part of their visit, the delegation will tour Arua City, Arua District, and Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement before concluding their mission in Koboko District. Their itinerary includes interactions with local leaders, civil society organizations, and community members to gain deeper insights into the region’s needs and opportunities.

The establishment of an EU embassy in Arua is expected to create new opportunities for economic and social development while reinforcing the already strong ties between Uganda and the European Union.
