Kyambogo, Uganda – April 23, 2025 — Chaos erupted at Kyambogo University this morning as police from the Field Force Unit fired tear gas and live bullets to disperse students protesting against a Shs50,000 surcharge for late registration and other academic policy grievances.

The demonstration, led by Guild President Akiso Benjamin, drew hundreds of students who chanted slogans and carried placards denouncing what they called “unfair and oppressive” university policies. The protest stemmed from a new directive by the university administration imposing a Shs50,000 penalty on students who register more than six weeks into the semester.

Tensions escalated when security forces intervened, reportedly using tear gas canisters and live rounds to break up the crowd. Several students were seen fleeing the university’s main campus while others took shelter in nearby buildings. Unconfirmed reports indicate that some students sustained injuries, though the extent remains unclear.

In addition to opposing the surcharge, the students are demanding that those with outstanding tuition balances be allowed to sit for their end-of-semester exams. Many claim the current economic situation has made it difficult for families to meet payment deadlines.

“We are not criminals. We are only asking for understanding and a chance to complete our education,” said Akiso, speaking briefly before the protest was broken up.

University officials have not issued an official statement on the incident, but sources indicate that an emergency meeting of the university council may be convened to address the unrest.

Human rights groups and student associations have condemned the police’s response, calling for restraint and dialogue between the university and student leaders.
