Hon. Betty Amongi Akena, the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, has pledged government support for creatives from Northern Uganda following a fruitful meeting with WALK Creative Arts Foundation.

During the meeting held yesterday in Kampala, Minister Amongi engaged in an in-depth discussion with the representatives of the foundation, exploring ways the government can collaborate with creative artists to unlock the full potential of the arts sector in the region.

She commended WALK Creative Arts Foundation for their role in empowering young creatives and promoting cultural expression in Northern Uganda. “The government recognizes the power of the arts in driving social and economic transformation, especially among the youth,” Minister Amongi stated. “We are committed to supporting initiatives that nurture talent, create jobs, and promote our cultural heritage.”

The Minister assured the delegation that the government would work closely with stakeholders in the creative sector to extend funding, capacity-building opportunities, and platforms for showcasing talent across the region.

WALK Creative Arts Foundation welcomed the commitment, noting that it is a significant step toward bridging the gap between policymakers and grassroots creative communities. They highlighted the urgent need for infrastructure, training, and market access to boost the creative economy in the northern region.

The meeting marks a positive step forward in efforts to mainstream the arts into Uganda’s development agenda, particularly in underserved regions like the north.

More details about the planned support programs are expected in the coming months.
