Kyambogo, Uganda – April 30, 2025 — Kyambogo University has suspended 17 students, including the Guild President, Benjamin Akiso, for their alleged involvement in a protest against the institution’s tuition policies.
In a statement issued on April 29, the university said the suspensions were effective immediately and would last for one month pending a formal disciplinary hearing.

The administration cited Regulation 40 of the Kyambogo University Students’ Regulations as the basis for the disciplinary action.
The suspended students are accused of orchestrating and participating in a demonstration on April 23 that disrupted normal campus operations.

The protest was reportedly in opposition to what students have described as "unjust and burdensome" tuition policies, including late payment penalties and fee increment proposals.
“In accordance with Regulation 40 of the Kyambogo University Students’ Regulations, the following students have been suspended for their participation in a protest that interfered with university activities,” the university’s statement read.
Student leaders and activists have condemned the suspensions, calling them an attempt to silence legitimate student concerns. “We were exercising our constitutional right to peaceful assembly and expressing the frustrations of the student body,” said one of the suspended students, speaking anonymously.
Meanwhile, the university maintains that while it respects students’ rights to express themselves, all demonstrations must be carried out within legal and institutional frameworks.
The disciplinary hearings are expected to begin within the next few weeks as tension continues to simmer on campus.
