The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has expressed regret over recent incidents involving the alleged assault and harassment of journalists by security personnel during the ongoing by-election in Kawempe. 

The army has vowed to investigate the matter thoroughly and take appropriate action against those responsible.

According to reports from the Kawempe area, several journalists were reportedly attacked by security officers, who were on patrol to ensure law and order during the electoral exercise. 

The journalists also claimed that their equipment was confiscated by members of the security forces. 

Details surrounding the altercation remain unclear, and it is not yet known what triggered the clash between the media personnel and the security officers.In response to the unfolding situation, the UPDF released a press statement expressing deep concern over the incident.

 The army emphasized that such actions, which disrupt the peaceful relationship between the security forces and the media, are completely unacceptable and must be avoided in the future. The statement further acknowledged that the incident could create unnecessary tension between the security services and the press, a situation that the UPDF seeks to avoid at all costs.

"We are deeply concerned about the reported incidents of media clobbering and the confiscation of equipment. We believe that whatever transpired should have been handled in a manner that prevents unnecessary tensions," the UPDF statement read.

 "The security forces must work in better coordination with the media to ensure that these unfortunate occurrences do not happen again.

"The army has confirmed that an internal investigation into the matter has already been initiated.

The results of the investigation will inform the next steps, including the potential disciplinary action against any individuals found to have violated the conduct expected of them. 

The UPDF reassured both the media and the public that the security forces take the issue seriously and will ensure that necessary measures are taken to restore trust and rebuild the positive relationship shared between the media and the military.

"We value our relationship with the media and other stakeholders. The media plays a crucial role in informing the public, and we will do everything within our power to rebuild the trust that has existed between us," the statement concluded.

The UPDF also took the opportunity to remind all Ugandans that maintaining peace and security is a shared responsibility. 

The military urged citizens and media alike to work together to ensure that the country remains safe and peaceful for all. 

The army acknowledged the significant role that the media plays in this collective effort and commended the positive contributions of journalists who report responsibly.

As investigations into the incident continue, the hope is that measures will be put in place to prevent any future clashes between journalists and security forces. 

The UPDF’s commitment to holding accountable those responsible for the assault on journalists is a positive step toward ensuring better coordination and respect for media freedoms during future electoral processes.
