Kampala — Veteran government communicator Ofwono Opondo has announced his decision to step down as Government Spokesman, confirming plans to contest for Member of Parliament for the elderly in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
Opondo, who has served in various government communication roles for over two decades, made the revelation while speaking on The Capital Gang show on Saturday. He disclosed that he will challenge Dominic Mafwabi Gidudu, the current MP representing the elderly in the Eastern Region, declaring with confidence that, “I have what it takes to knock him out.”
“It’s been 26 years of dedicated service as a communicator for different arms of government. I believe the time is right for me to transition into the legislature and contribute to much-needed reform from within Parliament,” Opondo stated.
He also confirmed that he has formally notified President Yoweri Museveni about his decision, writing to him to conclude his tenure by the end of this month.
“I wrote to the President notifying him about the conclusion of my tenure in three months,” he said. “By the end of April, I will have officially stepped down to fully focus on the elections.”
Opondo, who is affiliated with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), noted that consultations with party structures and his close allies are already underway to determine the direction and structure of his campaign.
His bid sets the stage for what could be a high-profile contest for the Eastern Region elderly MP slot, currently held by Minister Gidudu, and signals a major shift in Uganda’s political communications landscape.
This development adds to the growing list of political figures preparing for the 2026 elections, which are already shaping up to be hotly contested.
