Arua, Uganda – Police in Arua have issued a stern warning to dealers in gas cylinders and fire extinguishers, urging them to operate in open spaces and adhere to strict safety precautions following a tragic explosion that claimed one life and left another severely injured.

The unfortunate incident, which occurred in a local shop dealing in fire extinguishers, saw an extinguisher unexpectedly explode, killing one person on the spot and critically injuring another. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the blast sending debris flying and causing panic among residents and business owners nearby.

Arua police spokesperson, Collins Asea expressed deep concern over the safety standards in businesses dealing with highly pressurized equipment. 

"We urge all dealers handling gas cylinders and fire extinguishers to operate in well-ventilated areas and ensure that their equipment is properly maintained and certified. 

Negligence in handling such items can lead to devastating consequences," the spokesperson stated.

Authorities are now investigating the cause of the explosion, with initial reports pointing to possible mishandling or a faulty extinguisher. Experts have warned that expired or poorly maintained fire extinguishers can become dangerous, as the pressure inside may cause them to burst unexpectedly.

In response to the incident, local authorities are considering stricter regulations and safety inspections for businesses dealing with fire safety equipment. 

Meanwhile, business owners are being encouraged to undergo proper training in handling fire extinguishers and gas cylinders to prevent future accidents.

The injured victim is currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, with medical officials describing their condition as critical but stable.

Residents of Arua have expressed shock and concern over the incident, with many calling for more public awareness on fire safety measures.

"People need to be educated about the risks involved in handling these products. Many businesses don't follow safety guidelines, and this is a wake-up call," said one resident.

The police have assured the public that they will intensify inspections to ensure compliance with safety regulations, warning that businesses found neglecting precautionary measures could face penalties or closure.As investigations continue, authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious or unsafe handling of gas cylinders and fire extinguishers to prevent further tragedies.
