Challenging CHAN Draw for Kenya as Uganda Takes on Old Rivals

The stage is set for the much-anticipated TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, which will take place in East Africa for the first time since Rwanda hosted the tournament in 2016. 

Nairobi, Kenya, played host to a glittering draw ceremony at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on January 15, unveiling an intriguing line-up for the finals scheduled for August 2025.

The tournament, a showcase of talent exclusively featuring players who ply their trade in their domestic leagues, promises thrilling football action and a platform for homegrown stars to shine on the continental stage.

Group A: Battle of the Giants

Host nation Kenya faces a daunting challenge in Group A, often referred to as the "Group of Death." Sharing the pool with two-time champions Morocco and DR Congo, as well as Angola and Zambia, Kenya will need to bring their A-game to advance. The group features a wealth of experience and quality, making it one of the toughest in the tournament.

Group B: Tanzania's Stable Path

Tanzania, another host nation, finds itself in a relatively balanced Group B. Alongside Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic, the Taifa Stars will aim to capitalize on home support and consistent performances to progress.

Group C: Uganda and Familiar Challenges

As hosts in Group C, Uganda will face Niger, Guinea, and two yet-to-be-determined qualifiers. The pool presents both opportunities and uncertainties, with the Ugandan Cranes looking to leverage their experience and local knowledge to dominate. The qualifiers will add an element of unpredictability to the group dynamics.

Group D: Defending Champions Senegal in Action

Defending champions Senegal lead Group D, which includes Congo, Sudan, and Nigeria. This four-team group promises high-quality matchups, with Senegal seeking to retain their title against tough competition.

The journey to the finals is not yet complete, with two spots still up for grabs. Algeria, Comoros, Gambia, Malawi, Egypt, South Africa, and Gabon will battle it out in the final qualification round to fill the slots for Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2.

Adding to the excitement of the draw, football legends Hassan Wasswa Mawanda (Uganda), Mrisho Ngasa (Tanzania), and McDonald Mariga (Kenya) graced the ceremony as Draw Assistants. 

Their presence highlighted the significance of the tournament and the unity of East African football.

The TotalEnergies CHAN is a celebration of African football's domestic talent, providing a platform for players to showcase their skills and earn recognition on the continental stage. 

With Morocco and DR Congo leading the tally with two titles each, the 2025 edition promises to be fiercely competitive, especially with the tournament returning to East African soil.

With Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania co-hosting the event, the region is gearing up to deliver an unforgettable tournament.

Uganda has demonstrated steady progress in its CHAN appearances, with a strong debut in 2011 where they finished as runners-up, followed by a quarter-final finish in 2016 and a competitive showing in 2020. 

Each tournament has showcased the Cranes' resilience and growing depth in domestic football. Notably, players from West Nile and Northern Uganda have been instrumental in Uganda's success, contributing to the team's strength at various tournaments.
