The Uganda Women's National Basketball Team, affectionately known as the Gazelles, has clinched a coveted spot in the 2025 FIBA Women's AfroBasket. Their qualification was sealed with an impressive 74-63 victory against hosts Egypt in the Zone V Qualifiers final, held at the Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall in Cairo. 

This triumph was particularly sweet for the Gazelles, who had previously fallen to Egypt in the group stages with a narrow 65-62 loss. Learning from their earlier encounter, Uganda showcased resilience and tactical prowess in the final, overturning past misfortunes to emerge victorious. 

Game Highlights

First Quarter: The game commenced with a tightly contested first quarter, ending with Uganda holding a slim 19-18 lead.

Second Quarter: The Gazelles intensified their defense, limiting Egypt to just 11 points while expanding their lead to 40-29 by halftime.

Third Quarter: Uganda continued their dominance, outscoring Egypt 21-16, and entering the final quarter with a 61-45 advantage.

Final Quarter: Despite a spirited effort from Egypt, the Gazelles maintained their composure, sealing the game with a final score of 74-63.

Captain Jane Asinde delivered an exceptional performance, recording a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Her leadership on the court was instrumental in guiding the team to victory. 

Throughout the tournament, Uganda demonstrated consistent excellence. Despite a single group-stage loss to Egypt, the Gazelles secured victories against Kenya, South Sudan, and Burundi, showcasing their determination and skill. 

With this victory, Uganda secures its fourth appearance in the Women's AfroBasket, having previously participated in 1997, 2015, and 2023. The team now sets its sights on the continental tournament scheduled for July 25 to August 3 in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. Building on their seventh-place finish in 2023, the Gazelles aim for an even more impactful performance in the upcoming competition. 

The Gazelles' journey to qualification underscores their resilience, strategic growth, and the promising future of women's basketball in Uganda. As they prepare for the AfroBasket in Côte d'Ivoire, the nation rallies behind them, anticipating a performance that will inspire and elevate the sport's profile both locally and across the continent.
