Arua, Uganda – The youth under Arua City Boxing Club have organized a special boxing event on Idd Day to raise funds for underprivileged ghetto youths who have returned to school.
The proceeds from the event will be used to purchase essential scholastic materials and uniforms for these students, most of whom are orphans.
The much-anticipated boxing show is set to take place at Arua City Leisure Park in Barifa, behind the UNHCR Arua office. Speaking to journalists, Rashid Osino, the chairman of Arua City Boxing Club, revealed that the event aims to support 17 reformed ghetto children who have re-enrolled in various primary schools, including Niva, Arua Prisons, and Arua Hill, among others.
“They have been asked to buy boots, uniforms, calculators, pens, and other school essentials, but they cannot afford them. These are children who were once involved in street crime, snatching people’s belongings, but they have since turned their lives around and gone back to school,” Osino explained.
Recognizing their financial struggles, the young boxers themselves proposed organizing the fundraising event.
“When they approached me, they said, ‘Chairman, you don’t have money. What can we do?’ They suggested using their boxing skills to put on a show and raise money for their needs. This initiative is entirely their own, and we are doing this to ensure they can stay in school,” Osino added.
Osino called upon the public to support the reformed youth in their educational journey. “We encourage everyone to attend and help these young boys and girls who have chosen education over crime. The event will be affordable, with an entry fee of only UGX 2,000 for children and UGX 5,000 for adults. Security has also been assured, as we have coordinated with the police to provide safety at the venue,” he said.
In addition to boxing, organizers have planned various games and activities for children attending the event. Ayub Aluma, the Assistant Coach of Arua City Boxing Club, confirmed that the show will feature seven exciting matches, promising an entertaining experience for attendees.
“All our boxers are ready to put on a great performance. We urge everyone to come and enjoy the fights while supporting a good cause,” Aluma stated.
Among the beneficiaries is Junior Haruna, a reformed ghetto youth now in Primary Four at Arua Prison Primary School.
Haruna, who spent three years on the streets snatching phones, expressed his gratitude for the initiative. “School is shaping me into a better person. I no longer have time to engage in crime.
I appreciate Hon. Osino for organizing this boxing show because it was becoming very difficult for me to afford school materials.
I also urge my friends on the streets to leave their past lives behind and join us in school so that they can build a better future,” he said.
With excitement building for the event, the Arua community is expected to turn out in large numbers to support the noble cause. The show will start at 3:00 PM and conclude at 6:30 PM on Idd Day.
